    Traffic estimation for large urban road network with high missing data ratio

    Intelligent transportation systems require the knowledge of current and forecasted traffic states for effective control of road networks. The actual traffic state has to be estimated as the existing sensors does not capture the needed state. Sensor measurements often contain missing or incomplete data as a result of communication issues, faulty sensors or cost leading to incomplete monitoring of the entire road network. This missing data poses challenges to traffic estimation approaches. In this work, a robust spatio-temporal traffic imputation approach capable of withstanding high missing data rate is presented. A particle based approach with Kriging interpolation is proposed. The performance of the particle based Kriging interpolation for different missing data ratios was investigated for a large road network comprising 1000 segments. Results indicate that the effect of missing data in a large road network can be mitigated by the Kriging interpolation within the particle filter framework

    Automated Movement Detection with Dirichlet Process Mixture Models and Electromyography

    Numerous sleep disorders are characterised by movement during sleep, these include rapid-eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) and periodic limb movement disorder. The process of diagnosing movement related sleep disorders requires laborious and time-consuming visual analysis of sleep recordings. This process involves sleep clinicians visually inspecting electromyogram (EMG) signals to identify abnormal movements. The distribution of characteristics that represent movement can be diverse and varied, ranging from brief moments of tensing to violent outbursts. This study proposes a framework for automated limb-movement detection by fusing data from two EMG sensors (from the left and right limb) through a Dirichlet process mixture model. Several features are extracted from 10 second mini-epochs, where each mini-epoch has been classified as 'leg-movement' or 'no leg-movement' based on annotations of movement from sleep clinicians. The distributions of the features from each category can be estimated accurately using Gaussian mixture models with the Dirichlet process as a prior. The available dataset includes 36 participants that have all been diagnosed with RBD. The performance of this framework was evaluated by a 10-fold cross validation scheme (participant independent). The study was compared to a random forest model and outperformed it with a mean accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of 94\%, 48\%, and 95\%, respectively. These results demonstrate the ability of this framework to automate the detection of limb movement for the potential application of assisting clinical diagnosis and decision-making

    Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial

    Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials. Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure. Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.     Structural similarity-based object tracking in multimodality surveillance videos

    This paper addresses the problem of object tracking in video sequences for surveillance applications by using a recently proposed structural similarity-based image distance measure. Multimodality surveillance videos pose specific challenges to tracking algorithms, due to, for example, low or variable light conditions and the presence of spurious or camouflaged objects. These factors often cause undesired luminance and contrast variations in videos produced by infrared sensors (due to varying thermal conditions) and visible sensors (e.g., the object entering shadowy areas). Commonly used colour and edge histogram-based trackers often fail in such conditions. In contrast, the structural similarity measure reflects the distance between two video frames by jointly comparing their luminance, contrast and spatial characteristics and is sensitive to relative rather than absolute changes in the video frame. In this work, we show that the performance of a particle filter tracker is improved significantly when the structural similarity-based distance is applied instead of the conventional Bhattacharyya histogram-based distance.
